What is a vintage rug?
Usually a vintage rug refers to a handmade Oriental rug that has some age. Vintage rugs are usually from the 1970’s or 1980’s. Anything older than that would be classified as a semi antique rug or antique rug. A vintage rug could be from any origin including, Persia, Indian, Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, and other rug weaving regions.
Persian rugs:
Persian rugs are usually the higher end of vintage rugs scale. Better weaving tactics, hand spun wool and centuries old designs as well as traditional natural dye making, and handspun wool has made Persian rugs the top tier in the rug weaving industry. However, this isn’t hard and fast. Indian and Pakistan have produced some rugs that are on par with Persian rugs. Rugs that were woven between the world wars were manufactured by the British Indian Rug Company are sought after by collectors. These Indian rugs were woven using imported Manchester wool and were produced with the Victorian era in mind. We still some of these gems in-home all-over Ontario, even here in London. After all these years, these British Indian rugs still have a glorious luster. Also, the Ziegler rug company set up shop in India to produce nice quality Indo Persian rugs which were meant to compete with Persian Rugs. The intention was to capture a portion of the booming North America and European Market decorative market.
